‘Bachelor in Paradise’ Alum Evan Bass Weighs In On Scandal, Begs ABC Not to Cancel the Show

Evan Bass is hoping one bad experience won’t ruin Paradise for others.

The Bachelor in Paradise alum opened up about his experience on the show in a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday, begging ABC not to cancel the series following this month’s incident between season four castmates Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson.

Bass, who proposed to fellow BIP contestant Carly Waddell on season three of the dating show — and is rumored to be marrying her this weekend on camera — began his essay by sharing the information he’s heard from castmembers who were on-site when the incident went down.

“The overwhelming theme from the cast is that although these allegations should be taken seriously, the actual events have been blown way out of proportion and that ‘consent’ was not an issue that day or in the days following,” Bass wrote. “Their anger is not so much directed at Corinne but more at the rogue ‘newbie’ producers who manufactured something out of nothing. Now that Corinne has lawyered up, she’s following the natural path of a scandal by protecting herself, as she has every right to do.”

The father of three goes on to state that as listed in their contracts while appearing on a Bachelor-related show, contestants “actions and words are our responsibility, including alcohol consumption.” “But in reality,” Bass added, “the producers are always there to help when things get fuzzy.”

“My friends and I were never once prodded or forced to drink alcohol. Hell, the furthest production goes is asking what type of beverage you’d like. And saying ‘water’ is a perfectly fine response,” Bass continued, before calling Chad Johnson’s alcohol-fueled behavior on BIP season three a one-off from the norm. “Alcohol is treated with the respect it deserves, and sometimes contestants are asked to stop.”

“In fact, I wasn’t allowed to drink for two weeks because of medication I was taking, and although I badly wanted a glass of wine for rose ceremonies, the staff would come running from all directions to stop me when I tried to sneak a sip or order a drink,” he recalled. “I’ve watched staff and producers stop many situations before they became a problem, even at the expense of making ‘great TV.'”

Bass concludes by making one last plea for Paradise‘s return.

“I want to watch love form and grow on ABC Mondays and Tuesdays. I want to watch the next steady Jade and Tanner [Tolbert] and also the next roller-coaster relationship like I had,” he admits. “Love always wins, and I trust in Paradise.
