A British Music icon opens the 2012 London games in true UK style! Hey guys, you’re watching ClevverMusic. The 2012 London Olympic games have officially begun, and thanks to Danny Boyle who directed the 4 and a half hour long opening ceremony, they were started in true Brit fashion. He stressed that the opening ceremony was not a concert, it was about the athletes, but that didn’t stop him from throwing in a couple noteworthy musical acts.

No doubt one of the best things to come out of England is music, for instance, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Lucky for us, one of these icons was on hand to open the games- Paul McCartney. The opening ceremony started with a British history lesson and then the introducing of the 204 countries and athletes participating, backed by homegrown British music. Songs played during the opening ceremony included the Sex Pistols “God Save The Queen”, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie”, and of course Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”. Don’t worry, an Opening Ceremony Soundtrack is already available for purchase from Universal Music, and you can check out a full listing of Songs Heard at the 2012 Opening Ceremony down in the description.

Now to the performances. English band the Arctic Monkeys sang hit “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor” and then did a Beatles cover “Come Together” as lit up birds circled the stadium on bicycles. And after David Beckham helped deliver the Olympic torch to the stadium, Sir Paul McCartney closed the show with Beatles hit song: “Hey Jude”. We think he was the perfect person to perform at the opening ceremony in London, but we’re not sure about the song choice- what do you guys think?
